5 Tips to Recruit on a Budget

Are you wondering if it’s possible to recruit top talent on a small budget? It might seem impossible, but finding the right talent at the right time is no easy feat, even if you do have money to throw.

Both small and large companies aren’t able to break the bank when it comes to recruitment, but there are some things you can still do to make sure that you are finding the right hires for the job. Consider using the following tips to maximize your reach and bring top talent to your company, without going a dime over budget.

1. Take advantage of your web presence.

Whether you tap into it or not, the world wide web is constantly talking about your business. Search engines, your company’s website, your social media accounts and even your employee’s blogs, your potential candidates have a wealth of information about you at their fingertips. Even before they take a step inside your doors.

It’s crucial that you use this to your advantage, especially if you’re interested in recruiting on a budget. Make sure that your web presence tells the story that you want it to. Utilize your company’s website, blog and social media accounts to share what your values are, to praise your hardworking employees and to share the personality of your brand. This will help you not only attract candidates, but attract the right candidates who want to work for you.

2. Concentrate on quality over quantity.

You might be tempted to attract candidates from far and wide when you are looking to fill some roles, but doing things this way can cause a host of other issues. Having a huge amount of applicants means you might let some really great matches slip through the cracks. Instead, try to focus on targeting highly qualified candidates which will let you maximize your resources, build up a relationship with every single applicant and avoid hiring the wrong person.

3. Use employee and vendor referrals.

One of the best (and least expensive) ways that you can find high quality candidates that fit in with workplace culture is through word of mouth. You can encourage your employees to refer to their colleagues and any other people they might know in the industry. You could also incentivize these referrals by offering a gift to team members whose referral is hired on.

Other than your own employees, there are probably people that interact with your company regularly who are also part of the same industry. For example, vendors or sales people. You could share your employee needs with other people that you do business with, let them know what you are looking for and ask if they know anyone who might fit the bill.

4. Join in on networking and industry events.

Networking isn’t only a great way to get a job, it’s also a good way to meet potential candidates. Your future employees could be out there attending industry events and networking via LinkedIn or other digital platforms trying to find their next opportunity. Instead of hoping they come to you, you can simply meet them where they are.

You should also try to keep an open mind and be open to taking calls from people wanting to network with you, and respond to emails from those you don’t know who want to learn more about your company. This is a great way to help you find candidates who have great communication skills and who take initiative to look for the perfect job for them.

5. Utilize technology.

Finding and sifting through your candidate pool can be time consuming, but there is a lot of technology out there that can help you expedite the process. Artificial intelligence technology can help you automate your hiring process, it can sort through tonnes of data in short periods of time, sort through potential candidates and give you a neat list of who might be best suited for the job.

There is other software that can help improve the language you are using in your job description to help you tailor it to find the specific types of candidates you are looking for. By using the right recruiting tech, you can save hours every day which would have been used to sort through candidate applications. Now, you can use your time on other things like actually interviewing candidates.

Businesses who fail to use big data during their recruitment process are losing out.
