How Gamification Can Help Remote Employees

Sam Caucci

The pandemic has brought along a lot of changes both to our daily lives and how we work. These changes will need new business tools in order to help remote teams feel more connected and engaged. Implementing gamification strategies can help companies and employees cope with these changes in a productive and more efficient way. Here is how gamification can help:

Creating a Stronger Company Culture

What are your company’s goals, beliefs and values? What actions should be rewarded and how do you want your employees to feel when they are at work? These questions all have to do with your company culture, something that can be easy to emulate while in a physical space onsite, but can be harder to convey online.

Implementing a gamification platform can help you reward meaningful actions which support your company culture. Think of the actions that help tie your company together and create meaningful connections, such as helping other co-workers, completing tedious tasks, encouraging innovation or supporting a project. Gamification platforms allow you to elevate these member contributions, beyond the statistics. All employees appreciate recognition, whether that be online or not.

Facilitate Better Communication

Communication is founded on clarity. Gamification platforms allow you to give constant, immediate and honest feedback. These are key for fostering a sense of connectivity that is easy to do when you are working in-person, but difficult to accomplish when working remotely.

While keeping spreadsheets is useful for the end of the term to see how well your teams did, they don’t allow you to witness things as they unfold in real-time. Gamification platforms allow you to understand what’s working or what’s not working immediately, and this can help you make better, more meaningful decisions that are highly informed in the moment.

Instead, you can create and focus on more micro-goals and targets for your calls, meetings, presentations and knowledge transfer. Gamification makes these events simple and even more fun to participate in. Your tracking can also include metric KPIs such as sales, closed deals, or revenue targets.

Another important aspect of communication is making sure that your employees feel seen and heard. Checking in often is important, however, working remotely can make things less spontaneous. Checking in is much easier in an in-person setting, but can be quickly forgotten when you are remote. You can use gamification to interact, listen to and provide new ways to connect with your team individually to foster a feeling of visibility and community.

Foster Friendly Competition and Engagement

Certain individuals thrive on a bit of friendly competition once in a while, and engaging in these activities can help boost employee engagement big time. You can use this to your company’s benefit by creating friendly gamified competitions between teams or individuals. Just know that teams that can play together usually thrive together, and getting creative with rewards or compensation can contribute to getting the best results.

You can use rewards like popular gift cards, monthly bonuses or charitable donations. When you understand your employees, it’s easy to understand what they care about and will move them into action.

Gamification strategies and platforms are able to add some spice to an otherwise dull, online work environment. If you notice many of your employees behaving in a disengaged way, or even just one or two, gamifying your work processes can be a good way to revive employee engagement remotely.
