A recent study conducted by Florida State University, Saving Jane, and Elon University has highlighted the transformative potential of games in addressing critical social issues, specifically human trafficking. The research showcases an innovative e-learning game, 1Huddle, designed to educate college students about human trafficking, marking a new frontier in digital education.
Piloted across two U.S. universities (FSU + Elon), the game was made accessible on students’ smartphones, blending convenience with engaging gameplay. A total of 227 students participated, playing the game until they achieved a minimum score of 90%. The study explored not only how students interacted with the game but also their perceptions of its effectiveness in raising awareness about human trafficking.
The results were promising: most participants reported an increase in their knowledge of human trafficking after engaging with the game. Additionally, the majority of students found the game to be an effective awareness tool and said they would recommend it to their peers. Notably, many preferred this gamified approach over traditional written materials.
The study underscores the practical implications of integrating gamified learning tools into educational settings to tackle pressing societal challenges. By making complex topics more accessible and engaging, learning games on 1Huddle can enhance understanding and foster greater awareness among young adults.
The study highlights its potential to go beyond traditional education, serving as a dynamic platform for social change. By leveraging technology and innovative design, educators and policymakers can address critical issues like human trafficking in a way that resonates with today’s tech-savvy generation.
This research demonstrates that games aren’t just for entertainment—they can be powerful tools for education and awareness.
