Why Employee Training Should be Interactive

Sam Caucci

Scrap those pre-recorded videos and powerpoint presentations, it’s time that you embraced a better style of training. One that’s interactive, demonstrated to be more effective, and a lot more fun and engaging for your employees. Switching your training style over to interactive training isn’t difficult, and it doesn’t require any expert knowledge. In most cases, interactive training will just need a basic level of understanding how to use computers and mobile devices.

What are interactive training programs?

So what exactly does interactive training entail? Interactive training can include any group activities, simulations, games, quizzes, assessments or anything else which helps keep employees engaged and active within the learning process. By using these various methods during training, it ensures that your team members are staying present. And when you have an engaged workforce, your team will be compelled to see the value in the training they are participating in.

As a result, this will lead to building better relationships and helps to give a voice to each employee within their training. Instead of sitting and listening to a presentation or reading a manual, they instead become an active participant during the training program. It’s important to also keep in mind that this type of training might be out of some employee’s comfort zone, but a good facilitator or a well put together e-learning training module can help to accommodate differences in learning styles.

Benefits of Interactive Training

As you can see, there are many benefits associated with interactive training. Here are some more benefits outlined below:

Low risk learning.

The whole point of training is to learn and a great way to learn is to make mistakes during the learning process. During interactive learning, your employees can take courses and go through simulations, make mistakes and learn exactly where they went wrong. All of this can take place before they get back on the clock, which makes interactive training no risk with a lot of reward.

Reinforce learning through direct feedback.

Passive, one-direction learning leaves little to no room for immediate feedback. Participants need to be able to absorb a large amount of information on a specific topic, then later on demonstrate what they understood during work hours or during a quiz, after which they will receive feedback at the end. On the other hand, with interactive learning, learners will receive instant feedback. Employees will be able to respond to the learning content and reinforce what they learned all on their own, or with the appropriate level of support. Interactive learning allows employees to make mistakes, understand where they went wrong and do better in the future, all without needing to spoon-feed them along the way.

This is also a great benefit for leaders as they can receive unique insights into their team’s way of learning and doing things. Imagine a team member is playing a learning game that is time-sensitive. As they play, they will receive instant feedback on their performance, letting them understand both their strengths and weaknesses. As they play, leaders can assess their performance in real time.

Combine several different learning styles.

Everyone learns in different ways. Some people are visual learners, others are audio learners and yet others might be hands-on learners. During interactive training programs, it’s not difficult to accommodate several different learning strategies. Even during the same training session. This can help leaders engage more employees with a more broad, well-rounded approach.

Create a more engaging work environment.

Team building and employee engagement is an incredibly important aspect of running a successful organization. Interactive training naturally inspires more engagement from team members because it is designed to be immersive, personalized and it can offer opportunities for microlearning. These factors contribute to a better learning experience overall, while giving a better understanding of the material.

Gamification of learning content adds to a fun experience while introducing a degree of challenge to the learning process. Game-based learning allows leaders to seamlessly integrate learning content into play; which remains one of the best ways to engage employees with their training material.

Improve retention rates.

Retention is something almost every company in every industry struggles with. Losing top talent can really hurt your bottom line. Interactive training encourages engagement, and this improved engagement helps to improve retention rates as well. Many traditional methods of training require memorization and regurgitation, but not all learners are able to do this easily. Interactive training will immerse learners in a virtual, partial or Augmented Reality learning environment which helps reduce barriers to learning. As a result, they will enjoy better recall, understanding and a greater ability to come up with creative solutions.
